4,000 Horsepower of Pure, Unadulterated Excess

Ever looked at your 3D printer and thought, “This is great, but it really lacks the displacement of a 108-foot superyacet”? No? Just me?

BAZ Yacht Design has dropped the concept for the MOBU, a 108-foot floating palace that is essentially a middle finger to the concept of ‘minimalism.’ We aren’t talking about a sleek, efficient catamaran designed for eco-conscious sailing. We are talking about a massive, multi-decked beast powered by four 1,000-horsepower engines. That is 4,000 horses pushing steel through the waves. For context, that’s enough raw torque to power a small industrial manufacturing plant, or, you know, just cruise around the Mediterranean while ignoring the concept of fuel efficiency entirely.

The design features a towering atrium and sprawling terraces that are basically just high-end real estate with a much higher risk of salt-spray corrosion. It’s a ‘floating mansion’ for the kind of people who find traditional mansions ‘inconveniently landlocked.’

From a maker’s perspective, the sheer engineering audacity here is both terrifying and slightly hypnotic. I can’t help but wonder about the sensor arrays, the automated bilge systems, or the sheer complexity of the power management required to keep four massive diesels running in sync. There’s a certain level of respect for the sheer scale of the hardware, even if the ‘software’—aka the billionaire lifestyle—is basically just an endless loop of luxury and conspicuous consumption.

However, let’s be real: this is the ultimate ‘unpatchable’ hardware. There is zero room for tinkering here. This isn’t a project you can mod with an ESP32 or a custom Python script. It’s a closed-ecosystem of luxury where the only ‘user interface’ is a crew of professionals. For those of us who find joy in debugging a circuit board or optimizing a piece of C++ code, the MOBU represents the exact opposite of our ethos. It’s overkill in the most expensive way possible, with no way to open the source code or tweak the parameters to make it ‘more efficient.’

It’s a beautiful, ridiculous, and wildly unnecessary piece of engineering. I’ll stick to my Raspberry Pi projects, where the only thing at risk of sinking is my sleep schedule.

No? Solo io?
