From a pure aesthetic standpoint, I get the hype. If you’re into tabletop RPGs or just want your desk to look like something out of a high-fantasy epic, this is a pretty cool piece of prop-tech. The idea of a portable, rechargeable light source that doubles as a piece of decor is solid. It’s essentially an atmospheric mood light with a heavy dose of cosplay energy.
However, as someone who spends most of my time stripping down consumer electronics to see what’s inside, I can’t help but look at that price tag with a healthy dose of skepticism. $169 for what is essentially an LED strip inside a shaped piece of wood? If you have a soldering iron and a basic understanding of power management, you could probably build a much more customizable version of this using an ESP32, some addressable RGB LEDs, and a bit of reclaimed wood for about a third of the cost.
There’s also the ‘planned obsolescence’ ghost haunting the machine. Since it’s rechargeable, what happens when that internal LiPo battery inevitably degrades in three years? Are we going to have a non-functional magic wand? For a product marketed as an ‘artifact,’ I’d love to see more focus on repairability rather than just ‘weathered’ aesthetics. If you’re a maker, the real value here isn’t in the finished product, but in the potential for a teardown and a complete firmware overhaul to add custom lighting patterns.
Is it worth it? If you have the disposable income and want a plug-and-play vibe for your gaming room, sure. But if you actually enjoy the ‘tinkering’ part of being a nerd, you might find more satisfaction in building your own staff.
